Join the APECS Book Club: Exploring Polar Landscapes Through Literature!
This summer offered the opportunity to participate in the inaugural APECS Book Club meeting, initiated by APECS Netherland, and co-organized by APECS Luxembourg (part of polar.lu), APECS Germany, APECS Italy, and the UK Polar Network. Members from different countries gathered for a virtual meeting that united polar enthusiasts and literature lovers.
The diversity in our group amplified the excitement as we prepared to explore a profoundly moving book: “Migrations” by Charlotte McConaghy.
In “Migrations,” we follow the touching journey of a protagonist determined to track the last remaining Arctic terns. The book's vivid illustrations of icy landscapes captivated us all, creating an inviting atmosphere for in-depth discussions. Moreover, its examination of the close relationship between humans and the environment felt particularly urgent in the light of today’s climate issues. For instance, the Arctic terns migrate an astonishing 71,000 kilometers each year, underscoring the challenges facing not only wildlife but also ecosystems under threat from climate change.
Reflecting on “Migrations”
When we connected online on September 19th, discussions flowed effortlessly, sparked by the intricate themes present throughout McConaghy’s work. The imagery of the Arctic terns’ migration struck a chord with many of us. We reflected on the broader implications of migration, not only for birds but also for communities and ecosystems grappling with climate change.
Hearing members share their interpretations was genuinely inspiring. Several participants emphasized the stark beauty of the Arctic tundra, characterized by its vast horizons and the resilience of nature battling against mounting challenges.
Connecting through literature
A highlight of our meeting was the connection we fostered through our mutual love for literature. We realized that, despite our different locations, we are unified by our dedication to understanding and preserving polar environments. The book club format permitted us to explore our thoughts openly, making every individual's input meaningful.
Our dialogues often branched out from the text itself. We took turns sharing personal experiences, fieldwork anecdotes, and academic insights that painted a rich picture of our individual connections to the Arctic.
What’s Next for the Book Club?
Exciting updates are on the horizon! We are thrilled to announce that the APECS Book Club will host a second session soon. While we are still finalizing the next book choice, we assure you that it will continue exploring themes around polar regions, climate change, and our connection to nature.
